Britain’s surveillance society ‘beyond Orwell’s worst fears’, warns Michael Mansfield

Britain has become a ‘Big Brother’ surveillance society with “CCTV on every corner”, according to leading left-wing barrister Michael Mansfield, QC.

The campaigning lawyer criticised government plans for a database monitoring telephone calls and emails.

“That these surreal proposals should even be contemplated shows how far beyond Orwell’s worst fears we have travelled,” he said in his autobiography, in Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer, which is being serialised in The Times.
