Tens of thousands of people could be hit by errors in vetting regime

Tens of thousands of people could be wrongly labelled a threat and barred from dealing with children or vulnerable adults under the Government’s new vetting regime.

The huge expansion in the number of people who will have to be cleared by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) increases the risk of mistakes in an already error-prone system, campaigners fear.

It means some people could be wrongly labelled criminals or dangerous while those who are a genuine high risk could slip through the net.

And while innocent people may be wrongly banned, the system could clear some offenders, such as paedophiles or bogus callers, to work in other sensitive jobs.
